LAKEWOOD, Colo. – What happens when you combine a professional chef with a home cook and a mystery basket of Colorado ingredients? You get fabulous food and great fun! The seventh annual “Dueling Cooks Challenge” was held at the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo, Colo. on Sunday, August 30.
“The audience really stepped up and rooted for their favorite teams this year,” said Wendy White, marketing specialist for the Colorado Department of Agriculture. “It is so exciting to see what delicious recipes contestants create in such a short time.”
Contest recipes are available online at www.coloradoproud.org. Results from the contest:
First Place: Chef Aaron Johnson, The Warehouse Restaurant, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Lauren Summerville, Pueblo West, Colo.
Second Place: Chef Gill Montanegro, Denver Merchandise Mart, Denver, Colo., and Laura Milosovich, Pueblo, Colo.
Third Place: Chef Brian Puett, Metate Room at Far View Lodge, Mancos, Colo., and Debbie Shosky-Billings, Pueblo West, Colo.

Professional chefs were paired with home cooks and given a mystery basket of all Colorado products including beef, potatoes, onions, cantaloupe, radishes, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, sweet corn, honey, flavored butters, eggs and dairy products. They also had access to a small pantry of items including seasonings and flour. Teams then had one hour to create an appetizer or salad, main course including a protein, starch and vegetable, and an optional dessert. Contestants competed for a top prize of $150 plus a medal and a bag full of Colorado Proud products.
Colorado Proud and the Colorado CattleWomen sponsored the event, which was supported by Alice’s Mexican Cuisine, Colorado Beef Council, Colorado Potato Administrative Committee, Epicurean Butter, Mount Popcorn, Nest Fresh Eggs, Philbee’s Honey Farm and the Western Dairy Association.
Colorado Proud was created by the Colorado Department of Agriculture in 1999 to promote locally grown, raised or processed products to consumers statewide. Currently, the program has more than 1,100 members that include growers, processors, restaurants, retailers and associations. For more information, visit www.coloradoproud.org.
