Creative Fun Wins Out in these Colorado State Fair Competitions

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State Fair’s General Entry Department provides an opportunity for all Coloradans to participate in the Fair through 1,500 different contests. This year, one contest highlights creativity and skill while another popular contest features the ability to decorate and roll a rock.

Amateur Art Contest

The amateur art contest is open to budding young artists ages 18 and below. Artwork must be original; paint by number, tracing, color book pictures, etc. will not be accepted. An original subject is encouraged rather than using already established characters (such as Spiderman or Transformers). Classes include, but are not limited to painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and jewelry. The entry fee is only $5. The contest will be held on August 10, 2015; registration is now open with an entry deadline of August 8, 2015.

Pet Rock Olympics

The Colorado State Fair’s Pet Rock Olympics is a unique contest that allows anyone with a bit of creativity and a desire for a friendly competition to be a part of the Fair. There are two categories: Best Dressed and Farthest Distance Roller. Contestants must bring their own rocks. There is no entry fee and prize money totals over $400.  The contest will be held on August 30, 2015; pre-registration is now open and contestants can also register the day of the event.

The 2015 Colorado State Fair will mark the Fair's 143rd year as Colorado's premier celebration of agriculture. The Fairgrounds provides nearly $34 million in economic activity to Colorado throughout the year; $29 million of that activity is driven by the annual State Fair event. In addition to showcasing Colorado agriculture, the annual event features one of the country’s largest traveling carnivals, artwork, crafts, food competitions, thrilling rodeo action, a wide variety of food and merchandise booths and a Fiesta Day honoring Colorado's ties to the Hispanic culture.
